Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such medications need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
