Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
