Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement state initial examinations show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
An important representative said the incident left him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
