At least thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
